I chose stars and ghosts but my mazes have none.

They are drawn on the children's levels only, Very easy to Medium, because the cells of harder mazes are too small for pictures. If your book has no children's level, the card notes "Stars and ghosts are drawn on the children’s levels only (Very easy to Medium)." A very small maze can also be too short for stars.
