How do picture markers work?

In "Start and finish", choose "Pictures: lead the rabbit to the carrot (children)". A picture sits in the start cell and another in the finish cell, and How to play says "Start at the first picture and lead it to the second one." The other choice is "Arrows at the way in and the way out".
