How many colors and regions does a photo get?

By readers: toddlers 5 colors and up to about 30 regions, kids 8 and about 90, seniors 10 and about 100, bold and easy 12 and about 260, detailed 16 and about 600. More detail allows smaller regions. Colors too alike to tell apart become one. Near-white areas stay white, without a number.
