How do I set up Ollama to write books on my own computer?
Ollama is a free program that runs AI models on your own computer: no key, no account, and your manuscript never leaves the machine. It needs a recent computer (16 GB of memory or more is comfortable), and small models write weaker chapters than Gemini, so if you just want to start writing, use the free Gemini key first. To set it up: 1) Download Ollama from ollama.com/download and install it. 2) Open it once; it keeps running in the background, with a small llama icon near the clock. 3) Download a model: in the Ollama window choose a model and send it any message, or open Terminal (Mac) or Command Prompt (Windows), type "ollama pull llama3.1:8b" and press Enter. That model needs about 5 GB of disk space. 4) Wait until it says "success". 5) In BookyAI open Settings, "AI engines", "Ollama" and press Test. Leave the Ollama URL as it is (http://localhost:11434). Your model then appears in the "Ollama model" list. From version 1.9.17 these steps are also inside the app: Settings, Ollama, "Set up Ollama on your computer: step by step".
