Does the tips page explain the code?

Yes. With a code, "Before you begin" starts with "Find the letter, word or shape in each space and color it with the color it has in the key under the picture.", or for sums "Work out the sum in each space, then color it with the color of its answer in the key under the picture.", in the book's language.
